Obituary for William Alexander "Alex" Umphlett Jr.

William Alexander Umphlett, Jr., 91, of White Stone, Virginia died on December 14, 2014. He was born on February 12, 1923 in Norfolk, Virginia, son of the late, William A. Umphlett, Sr. and Ritchie Ingram Umphlett. He was a WWII Army veteran.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Umphlett and his wife, Mae and Kevin Umphlett; a daughter, Michele Osborne; grandchildren, Britt Whaley, Walter Umphlett, Kerrie Walton, Briana Murphy and Maggie Osborne; great grandchildren, Brennen Whaley and Morgan Whaley and a brother, Dave Hinson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Vaughn Umphlett.

Alex was a retired Tugboat captain.He was chairman of the Wetlands Board and a lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He will be remembered for his lifelong love of the water, sports, God, his friends and especially his love for his family.

A special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Commonwealth Assisted Living and to Hospice of Virginia for the excellent care they gave Alex and for their kindness and compassion to the family.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. Tuesday, December 16 at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service at White Stone Baptist Church Cemetery.
