Obituary for John Earl Young

On May 28, 2015, our beloved John Earl Young, 74, of Reedville, VA, passed away. John was born on February 5, 1941 in Sophia, WV to the late Rev. Cleveland Richard Young and the late Susan Reid Young. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert J. Blair and his grand-nephew, Hunter Scott Lambert.

John was a graduate of Sophia, WV High School where he excelled in academics and sports, especially football. While in high school, John was elected class president for each of the four years. He entered the United States Army in 1959. Upon completion of his service in the army, John embarked on an honorable and esteemed career in law enforcement.

While employed by the United States Capitol Police, John held positions as Officer, Plain Clothes Officer, Recruiter, Investigator and Detective. He was also assigned to Special Detail, providing security for President Ronald Regan and other public figures. His accolades from senators and other government notables are many. He was lauded for his professionalism in conducting his duties and recognized for his trustworthiness and concern.

Upon retiring from the Capitol Police in Washington, D.C., John retired to Reedville, Virginia, where he spent many happy years boating and fishing in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. He became involved in many activities and soon found a second home with his American Legion family. He remained active in the American Legion, serving as Sergeant-At-Arms at the time of his death. John was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and other organizations. He was a loyal Washington Redskins Fan.

John is survived by his siblings and their families: Jimmie Young (Jackie), Fredericksburg, VA; Lenny Young (Topsy), Mechanicsville, MD; Loretta Blakely (Lewis), Lottsburg, VA; Sallie Blair, Martinsburg, VA; Paul Young, Wilton Manors, FL; Libby Flanagan (Dave), Dublin, VA and Roger Young (Sandy), Crab Orchard, WV. “Uncle Johnny,” as he was known to his 15 nieces and nephews, 28 grand-nieces and nephews and 4 great-grand-nieces and nephew, was dearly loved by all. He made each niece and nephew feel as if he or she were his favorite.

A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015. The tribute will begin at 2:00 PM with an American Legion Ceremony at 39 American Legion Way, Reedville, Virginia. Following the service, friends and family are invited to gather at Festival Hall, 177 Main Street, Reedville, to continue the celebration. Dress is casual.

The family will honor John’s wishes for a private burial service.
