Obituary for Edward Robert Oklesson

Edward Robert  Oklesson
Edward Robert Oklesson, 85, of Williamsburg, formerly of Reedville, Virginia passed away on May 10, 2016 at VCU Hospital, Richmond, VA.

He is survived by his wife, Ima Jean "GiGi" Oklesson; sons, Edward R. Oklesson, Jr. and Daniel M. Oklesson and daughter-in-law Marybeth Oklesson; grandson, Stephen Oklesson; granddaughters: Katie, Lauren and Kelley Oklesson.; and great-grandchild, Jordan Wilmer. Ed was a dedicated family man and fisherman, and was described by all who met him as a warm and engaging man.

Born August 20, 1930 in Strabane, PA, he was the son of Rudolph Oklesson and Frances Oklesson. Ed attended Cannonsburg High School and after graduating, enlisted in the Army from 1948 to 1951, serving at Fort Meyer in Arlington, Virginia. After the army, he started his distinguished 36+ years career in the federal government that began at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory as a machinist, and continued on as a manufacturing engineer with the Naval Oceanographic Office, Naval Air Systems Command, and Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. Ed, also, spent several years working as a manufacturing engineer for Pressure Science Inc. as a break within his federal service, He completed a secondary education degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Maryland and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and became a Certified Manufacturing Engineer in 1973 through the Society of Manufacturing Engineers(SME). After retiring from his government service, Ed performed consulting work with LSA for 10+ years before he truly retired in 1997.

In 1997, Ed and Gigi built their retirement home in Inland Harbor/Reedville on Warehouse Creek and proceeded to enjoy life on the water in the NNK. In Reedville, Ed joined the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion - Reedville Post, where he served as Post Commander. Ed truly loved his friends, neighbors and Legion buddies in Reedville. In 2015, Ed and Gigi moved to Brookdale in Williamsburg, Virginia, where Ed acquired more new friends to share stories and activities with. Ed will leave behind many family and friends who loved his unbeatable sense of kindness and service.

A mass will be held 1:00 p. m. Friday, May 13 at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock. Interment will be held 3:00 p. m. at Roseland Cemetery, Reedville. Family will receive friends 11:30 a. m. to 12:45 p. m. at Currie Funeral Home prior to the service.
