Obituary for Phyllis Fiske Smith

Predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Rodney W. Smith, Phyllis was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haley Fiske, Jr. of New York City. Her grandfather was the President of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
She was educated at The Greenwood School in Maryland and graduated from The Chapin School in New York City in 1941. She then attended The Child Education Foundation and graduated from Adelphi University on Long Island, New York in 1945 (Magna Cum Laude).
Phyllis met her husband while both were teaching at Grace Church School in New York City. After several years of teaching, she became Assistant to the Senior Minister of the Rye Presbyterian Church, where she later became a Deacon and then an Elder.
She raised two sons, Winthrop and Lawrence Lowe Smith. After retiring, she and Rodney moved to Irvington, Virginia where she pursued her love of painting and gardening. She also volunteered at the Lancaster Community Library and, in 1993, became interested in the Northern Neck Free Health Clinic. With the Free Health Clinic's President, Jean Nelson, she had the clinic's first building established on DMV Drive in Kilmarnock. She volunteered there in various capacities until stopped by her failing health.
She will be dearly missed by many, including her great friend, Jean Nelson, her two sons, Win and Larry, Larry's wife Tammy, her nephew John Frederick Tweddle, and three granddaughters.
