Obituary for Robert Newton "Bob" Gibson Sr.

Robert Newton "Bob" Gibson Sr.
Newport News - Robert “Bob” Newton Gibson, formerly of Weems and Richmond, VA, peacefully took his final journey, before dawn on January 14, 2017. As the second of three sons, Bob was born in Lee County, VA on October 17, 1919, to parents, Herbert Hall and Julia (Click) Gibson.
Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Ione, daughter, Marilyn, brothers, Herbert Hall and Hugh Edwin, and second wife, Mary Willey. He will be greatly missed by sons, Robert N. Gibson, Jr. of Newport News and Jeffrey Alan Gibson of Virginia Beach, niece and nephews, Anne Virginia Gibson Tausch of Arlington, Robert Ryder Gibson of Charlottesville, and Henry Hall Gibson of Massachusetts, “daughter-of-the-heart”, Nancy C. Trussell of Newport News.
At an early age, he was well traveled, with many moves to various counties in Virginia for his father’s work as a Baptist Preacher. Then, as a young man, Bob assumed the head of house position upon his father’s untimely death, and soon after the start of WWII, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, proudly serving his country as a radio operator in Japan, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Bob returned to Virginia, making a home with Ione and starting a family. As Training Director with Life of Virginia (Insurance), he relocated every couple years. One of the stories Bob loved telling people was that each of his three children were born in different states.
After retiring, Bob enjoyed traveling by car, mostly throughout the Northeast US and into select areas of Canada. The scores of pictures and slides, produced over the years, illustrated his talent as a gifted photographer, and were proudly displayed wherever he lived, including his last “home” at Morningside Assisted Living in Newport News, VA.
The discipline and patriotism Bob experienced in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest. In later years, USMC memorabilia was always close by or worn daily… as was his favorite 5th Division Reunion T-shirt and ballcap.
Arrangements are under the care of Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, VA. A funeral service celebrating the life of Robert Gibson will be held on Friday, January 20 at 2 pm at Campbell Memorial Presbyterian, 3712 Weems Rd., Weems, VA 22576 with full military honors and interment immediately following. Instead of flowers, Bob would want you to donate your time to a worthy cause or perform an unexpected act of kindness for some unfortunate soul, in his name.
