Obituary for Dorothy Helen "Dottie" Hinkel (Wagner)

Dorothy Helen "Dottie" Hinkel (Wagner)
Dorothy Wagner Hinkel gently left us on September 28, 2017. Called "Dottie" by all who loved her, she was born April 6, 1921 to Fred C. and Helen Wagner, Irvington, NJ. An only child, she was the light of her father's eyes.

Dottie met Russell Hinkel at the Prudential Insurance Co. in Newark where they both worked. They married October 6, 1943. Always a Jersey shore girl, Russ and she spent their entire married lives in Belford, NJ.

An amateur herbalist, she swore by the curative and restorative powers of cranberry juice, she tried to drink the bogs of Jersey dry. Eating nine gin soaked raisins each morning, she avowed was a sure fire remedy for arthritis.

In 2002, Dottie came to live with her only child, Elaine and son-in-law, Tom Parrish in Fairfax, Virginia. She brought her gentle smile, quick wit, and ready laughter to their home. She traveled with them, tried new foods, won at the gaming table, and strengthened the mother-daughter bond between Elaine and her. In 2005, she moved to the Northern Neck, and she often remarked that she came into the world in Irvington and would go out near Irvington.

Grammie to her granddaughter, Gillian Parrish in St. Louis, MO; Dottie to her grandson, Preston and his wife, Amanda Parrish; and Grandma Dot to great grandchildren, Madeleine and Quinn; she was loved by all of us. Special thanks to all the girls at Commonwealth who all took such loving care of her; to her dear friend and "buddy", Amy Smither; to Dr. Patricia Monge-Meberg and Hospice of Va. and lastly to Adele Soule who was her everyday guardian angel.

Our Jersey girl will join Russell returning to New Jersey, the place she loved.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p. m. Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery, New Jersey.
