John “Jack” Minor Townes III
November 21, 1931 - January 19, 2018

Jack was born in Richmond Va., son of John Minor Townes , Jr. and Sara Gaines Townes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Meredith Ann (Puller) Townes;
sons, Timberlake Meredith Townes and wife, Anne Maureen and Stephen Fleming Townes, fiancée Sheila Gibson; grandchildren, John Phillip Townes, Meghan Anne Townes, Stephen Fleming Townes, Jr., Joshua Ryan Townes and Shelby Katherine Townes. He was preceded in death by his son, John Minor Townes, IV and his sister, Sara Deane Cheely.

He graduated from John Marshall High School where he served in the Cadet Corps Company “C”. Jack graduated from Virginia Military Institute Class of 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He served as President of the Old Guard Association, member of the General Committee and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Jack was also past president of The Sons of the American Revolution, member of Military Officers Association and Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club.

Jack served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Sendai, Japan.

He was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and retired after 30 years. Jack was elected to the Board of Supervisors and served as Chairman in East Goshen Township, Chester County, Pa.

They retired to White Stone, Va. in 1986 and founded Northern Neck Mechanical with his son Stephen.

Jack was an avid sportsman and loved his family and his country. He was especially proud of his alma mater VMI. He and Meredith traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada by motor home and later saw many exotic foreign cities and countries on trips and cruises around the world. Jack will be missed by all who knew and enjoyed his conversation, stories and company.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, Va. At 10:30 am on Saturday January 27, 2018. Interment will be private.
