Obituary for Norman Griffith Smith Jr.

Norman Griffith Smith, Jr. of Weems, Virginia, and beloved husband of Dana Young Smith for 42 years died at home on Monday, March 26, 2018.
In addition to his wife, Norm is survived by his mother, Eleanor Mellichamp Mills, his brother, Randolph Hooper Smith and wife Barbara, and sister, Amy Hope Smith. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Michael Duffy, David Arden Young and wife Gillian, and sister-in-law, Debby Young Jones and husband, W. C., as well as nine beloved nieces and nephews.
Norm was born in Washington, D. C., the oldest son of Norman Griffith Smith, Sr. and Eleanor Mellichamp Smith. He completed High School at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia, and was a graduate of William and Mary College. He began his banking career while still in college as a teller at United Virginia Bank/Williamsburg, and retired 31 years later from Sun Trust Bank in Richmond, Virginia. He particularly like playing the "Blues" on his guitar, and loved learning new songs and playing music with friends.
Norm retired to the Northern Neck of Virginia, and was an avid sailor and golfer. He belonged to the Rappahannock Rive Yacht Club and Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club. He also served on the boards of the Lancaster Community Library, Rappahannock River Yacht Club, Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, and was a past President of the local chapter of the William and Mary Alumni Association.
Norm fought a courageous battle against cancer during the past year. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of Virginia, 1328 Tappahannock Boulevard, Tappahannock, VA 22560. The family is so grateful for their caring services.
Funeral services will be held at Grace Church in Kilmarnock, Virginia, on Monday, April 2, 2018, at 1 p.m., with a reception immediately following, at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, 362 Club Drive, Kilmarnock, from 2 pm to 4 pm.
