Obituary for Marilyn Louise Nolte

Marilyn Louise Nolte
Marilyn Louise Nolte, aged 83, from Weems passed away at home on Monday, July 11, 2016.

Born Marilyn Louise Dimmitt on October 8, 1932 in Berwyn, Illinois. She was the daughter of Donald and Louise Dimmitt. She is predeceased by her parents and by her sister Katharine Dimmitt McWilliams. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas E. Nolte of Weems, VA. She is also survived by her four children Bruce Nolte of Boring, MD; Beth Koep of Asbury, NJ; Robert Nolte of Raleigh, NC; and Cheryl Nolte of Fairfax, VA. Her beloved grandchildren are Kathryn Dowd, Rebecca Koep, Karl Koep, Thomas Nolte, and Sarah Nolte and great grandchild Helayna Brady. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Margaret Stack of Wicomico Church, VA; her brother Donald Dimmitt of Chicago, IL; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Early in life, Marilyn lived in the San Angelo, TX area for a few years and then the family moved to Churchville, IL. From there she moved to Elmhurst, IL where she lived until her marriage in 1956. She graduated from York High School in Elmhurst, received her RN degree from Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing in 1952, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Elmhurst College in 1956. After her marriage she moved to the Baltimore, MD area where she continued her nursing career first as a pediatric nurse then as a nurse supervisor for a state hospital and then for many years as a school nurse at Franklin Elementary School in Reisterstown, MD. She and her husband lived and raised their family in Owings Mills, MD and Reisterstown, MD until 1979 when they relocated to Yardley, PA living there until retiring to Weems, VA in July 1990.

Marilyn’s passions were baking and quilting. She followed in her family’s tradition and instilled a love of baking in her daughters who carry on the custom of sharing baked goods at Christmas. Marilyn truly loved quilting. She began quilting while living in Reisterstown, MD and continued to quilt until shortly before her death. Upon her retirement to the Northern Neck, Marilyn became very active in several local quilting groups. She belonged to the American Quilters Association and was a founding member and past president of King Carter Quilters (Irvington). Over the years she was active in The Tavern Quilt Guild (Heathsville), the Uptown Quilt Guild (Warsaw), and the Rivah Quilters Guild (Kilmarnock). For over 30 years she taught quilting to hundreds of learners and experimented with many techniques. In her lifetime, Marilyn completed more than 60 full-size quilts by hand along with countless baby quilts, lap quilts, placemats, and wall hangings. She won several awards for her quilts over the years and had the honor of three times having a quilt chosen for display at the MidAtlantic Quilt Show. Her proudest moment as a quilter was having one of her quilts included in a book on reverse appliqué quilting.

Marilyn had a strong belief in God and the eternal. She also had a strong faith in life after death since a near death experience as a young woman. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
