Obituary for Hazel Viola Ford (Ball)

Hazel V. Ford passed away peacefully on March 10, 2018 surrounded by beloved family members. Hazel was born in Bluefield, West Virginia to the late Mattie and Charles Ball. She was preceded in death by her beloved and devoted husband Joseph William Ford, her young son David Wayne Smarr, and grandchild Harold John Biggs.
Hazel grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia with her 4 brothers and 3 sisters before moving to Cameron Valley in Alexandria, Virginia at the age of 14. After marriage, she moved to Braddock Road in Alexandria, Virginia where she raised her 5 children.
She was an active member of Braddock Baptist Church, PTA, Girl Scout Leader, and community activities. She was employed at Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company as a long distance operator. After her husband retired they moved to Lively, Va., where she became employed at Chesapeake Bank. Hazel enjoyed volunteering and participating in community activities. She was Treasurer of the Lively Homemaker Club for years. She was also President of the Corrottoman Senior Club and Coordinator of the Senior Trips.
Hazel is survived by 4 children,Harold G. Smarr Jr. of Springfield Va., Sharon Smarr Nethercutt of Kilmarnock Va., Brenda J Biggs, devoted and dedicated caregiver, of Lancaster, Va. and Janet Lee Minnigh (George) of Gatlinburg, TN. She is survived by 9 grandchildren, Bambi Bryant (Steve), Ronald Nethercutt (Jill), Brice Minnigh, Frederick Biggs, Edward Scott Nethercutt (Mindy), George Minnigh (Beth), Amy Melisa Smarr, Harold G. Smarr III (Stephanie), Christina Gibbs (Jason), 13 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p. m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Corrottoman Baptist Church and Graveside services will be held 1:00 p. m. Thursday, March 15, 2018 at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Va. Family will receive friends 4:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at Currie Funeral Home ,Kilmarnock. A reception will follow the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations sent in memory of Hazel V. Ford to Corrottoman Baptist Church, 48 Ottoman Ferry Road Lancaster, VA 22503.
