Obituary for Marion Oscar Ashburn

Marion Oscar  Ashburn
Marion Oscar Ashburn, born July 11, 1929, passed away in "Hospice Care" in Tampa, Florida on Monday evening, May 2, 2016. He was the retired vice president of warehouse management for Super Fresh Grocery. Born and raised in the village of Weems, he was a 1947 graduate of Lancaster High School, vice president of the class of 1945-46, captain of the basketball team, member of the baseball team,and the recipient of six Regatta Awards from Rappahannock Yacht Club in Irvington, Virginia for hydroplane boat racing on Carters Creek and Urbanna Creek. He was an avid quail hunter.

He served in the Army from 1952-1954. While stationed in Korea, he received the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Bronze Star for wounds received as a result of action with enemy forces.

He is survived by his Lancaster High School sweetheart and wife of 67 years, Jean Elizabeth Watts Ashburn, previously of Richmond, Virginia; his son, Michael Watts Ashburn (Diane Mary Ashburn) and granddaughters, Amy Arlene and Ryan Nicole Ashburn. His daughter, Bonnie Lee Ashburn Sandy, and grandchildren, Sarah-Jean Sandy, and David Roberts Purks, his son, Stephen Marion Ashburn (Janet Rose);grandchildren, Megan Renee Wright, Joshua Isaiah Ashburn and Stephanie Rose Mendoza.

He is survived by a sister, Virginia Lee Ashburn Simpson, and her husband, Edmund Gordon Simpson, nephews, Matt Walker Simpson and Edmund Gordon Simpson, Jr., and cousins, Iris Walker and Francis Bray of Reedville,, Wendy George Ashburn,and Casey and Aaron Ashburn of Weems.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Elizabeth Walker Ashburn; his father, Marion Lemuel Ashburn;his stepmother, Laura Blanch Verlander Ashburn; his daughter, Marion Elizabeth Ashburn, a sister, Frances Belle Ashburn Hanke; a half brother, Lemuel Richard Ashburn; his paternal grandparents, Minnie Belle Lumpkin and Oscar Ashburn and maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Clarence Walker.

Funeral services with military honors will be held 11:00 a. m. Monday, May 9 at Claybrook Baptist Church, Weems. A reception will follow in Bussells Hall after the graveside service . Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
