Janet McMahon Palmiotto,93 ,of Burgess, Virginia passed away on January 21, 2018. She was born December 12, 1924 in Tarrytown, N. Y. daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Moore McMahon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Michael J. Palmiotto, Sr. and her eldest son Michael J. Palmiotto, Jr.

Surviving are two sons, Patrick J. Palmiotto and Philip J. Palmiotto and wife “Toni"; daughter-in-law, Susan Palmiotto ; three grandchildren, Kristi Berry(Aaron), Patrick Brent Palmiotto (Becky) and Dylan Palmiotto (Ali) ; three great grandchildren, Grace Clair and Michael Allen Berry and Brennan Sol Palmiotto; her close friend, Colleen and her best friend of 80 years, Leona Sterrett.

She was a 1941 graduate of Alexander Hamilton High School in Elmsford, N.Y. where she served as the school secretary for 21 years and later as the school district clerk and business manager. After retirement in 1968, she was elected to the Board of Education and served four years as vice president. Mrs. Palmiotto served two terms as president of the Butler Johnson Post #520 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Elmsford, N.Y. She operated a bookkeeping and tax service in New York and New Mexico for 18 years.

In 1972 after moving to New Mexico, she held the positions of grants accountant, accounts payable clerk and supervisor of federal funds for the University of Albuquerque.

A talented musician, Mrs. Palmiotto has been involved with music liturgy since the age of 12 for a total of 81 years. A member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic church since 1989, she has served as music director, cantor soloist and organist. She also served St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Elmsford, N.Y. and St. Christopher’s Church in Montrose, N.Y. for many years in all aspects of their musical ministries. Locally she was a charter member of the Community Singers formerly The Festival Chorus, a member of the Chesapeake Chorale and the Rappahannock Women’s Chorale. In 1950 she participated at Carnegie Hall in a testimonial concert mass with the Ensemble Choral Society which was conducted and composed by Charles Albert McLain to honor Joseph Cardinal Mindzienthy. This noted concert mass was broadcasted over the Voice of America.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
