WEEMS-Sue Lane Winstead of Weems, widow of Garland Hubbard Winstead, died January 20, 2018, at the age of 92.
Nicknamed 'Tot' by her brothers when young, Tot (or Sue) graduated from the University of Virginia Nursing School during World War II and in her early 50s received her nurse practitioner degree in emergency medicine from the Medical College of Virginia.
From the day Rappahannock General Hospital opened its doors in 1977, her immeasurable knowledge and skills as an emergency room Nurse Practitioner stabilized critical and ill patients until a local doctor could be awakened and arrive at the hospital. Once a week for years, she also traveled to Warsaw to volunteer as an EMT and teach EMT classes with their rescue squad.
Tot loved the Northern Neck. She was instrumental in the beginning of Kilmarnock's first kindergarten above the old firehouse on Church Street. A voracious reader, she is remembered for raising funds, begging and hauling books and working tirelessly to bring the (once tiny) Kilmarnock Library on School Street to life.
She and Garland Hubbard were among the original members of Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club and right up to age 90, she played a wicked hand of duplicate bridge.
She was the first woman to run for Kilmarnock Town Council, losing by a small margin. Until her late 80s she volunteered at the free health clinic, Methodist Women's Thrift Store and Kilmarnock Museum. Her beloved black Labrador retrievers were her constant companions for years.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Lane Conrad and her partner, Benjamin S. Vincent III; her son, Garland Lee Winstead and his wife, Charlotte K. Winstead; three grandchildren, Gregory E. Conrad and his fiance Emilee Trafton of Charlotte, N.C., Brandt Whitcomb Conrad and his wife, Marissa Darmoc Conrad of New York City, Catherine Lane Dunlevy and her husband, Gene Dunlevy; and great-granddaughter, Adalyn Lane Dunlevy of Gloucester. She also is survived by her brother, Peter Baldwin Lambert of Richmond; and two step-granddaughters, Joy Mussari of Toano and Kristen Ashburn of Weems.
The family is especially grateful to Pauline Kenner, Tot's friend of 40 years, for keeping Tot's home straight and sparkling and for Pauline's care in the last months of Tot's life.
